3 Bible verses to remember when best laid plans meet reality

“The best-laid plans of mice and men oft’ go awry.” Scottish poet Robert Burns wrote that in his poem “To a Mouse” in the 1700s — but it’s still quoted today because it rings true for each of us (though many of us might not know the full quote or its origin — myself included).

It’s an apt quote for me because my plans to be more consistent with blogging and other writing-related things haven’t translated to reality this year. But I’m still here, still managing to get some words on the page between life and work events, and I have a few blog posts in the works to share in the coming weeks.

Translation: I haven’t abandoned you completely, so please don’t give up on me, either!

As much as the Burns quote fills my mind, as Christians we have better ones to lean on instead.

Here are three Bible verses I try to remember when my best laid plans get off track:

  • The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. (Proverbs 16:9 ESV)
  • For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)
  • That this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever. (Psalm 48:14)

Even when things don’t turn out the way we plan, God is in the middle of it and good things can still happen. He isn’t surprised by the detours or changes (or challenges). He knows exactly why things are happening the way that they are, so we can trust Him with the process. I hope that encourages you, especially if you’re in the middle of an “I didn’t plan for this” season.

I’ll see you again soon!

In the meantime: What’s an encouraging verse you turn to when your plans get off track? Share a comment below — it might be just the thing someone else needs to see!

With hope and joy,

Leigh

  1. Leigh, thanks for sharing these encouraging Scriptures to keep us focused on the Lord when life doesn’t go as planned. I have had a whirlwind few weeks as well, but knowing Jesus is with me and in me gives me peace. Blessings, my friend!
