Prayers for our nation on Election Day

By Leigh DeLozier (Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Pinterest | Goodreads)

Election Day 2024 is finally here. Millions of Americans cast their ballots during the early voting period, but millions more are traveling to the polls today.

It’s a time of anxiety and anticipation across the U.S. Countless people — in the U.S. and around the world —  will fight off sleep tonight as they watch the results roll in.

Whatever your position on any candidates or issues might be (and I’m not asking for those), I hope we can all agree that this great nation and our leaders need our prayers, no matter who they are and whether we voted for them.

I also hope we will all remember that God is in control. Nothing surprises Him. And He can work good through any person and any situation.

Will you pray with me?

Father God,

Every election is important, but this one seems to carry more weight than others. Thank you for the privilege of living in a country where we can vote and where our voices matter. Thank you for people who are willing to serve our country though elected offices — even those who might not share our same viewpoints.

Give us peace with today’s election results, from the smallest local issues to who will govern at a national level. Thwart any plans for violence that people might be plotting in response to results.

Guide our leaders. Grant them wisdom in their decisions and open their hearts and minds to the things you want. Use them in ways they’ve never imagined, ways that fit your plan and point back to you.

You can do mighty things in us and through us, Lord, no matter who we are or where we might be. You have used leaders again and again through the ages as people who had a role in your plan, even if they didn’t follow you or realize you were using them in that way.

Give us grace toward each other and understanding toward different opinions. We are all your children and you love each of us beyond what we deserve. Remind us of that, Lord, when stress is high and compassion is low.

Remind us too that your plan and purposes are the ones that matter. You are God. You are good. You are on your throne and in control. We thank you and praise you for that.

Amen.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)

  1. I’m just getting caught up on reading blogs after working three weeks during the election. I’m thankful we had a peaceful process. Thank you for your prayers, Leigh, your words so eloquently express our needs. Happy Thanksgiving!
